Macs are native to Australia where they were called the “Queensland nut”. They were brought to Hawaii in 1882 where they grow very happily, and the world’s first commercial macadamia nut production was begun. They are the world’s toughest nut to crack, it takes 300 pounds per square inch of pressure to crack their shell.
Macadamias are high in oleic acid (like olive oil) a monounsaturated fatty acid and they also contain significant amount of palmitoleic acid, another monounsaturated fatty acid. Macadamia nuts lower cholesterol the same way Olive oil does from a University of Hawaii study, published by the American Medical Association. Several studies have shown that macadamia nuts do not cause weight gain and in fact they may help with weight loss since their oil is completely monounsaturated.
The Lovejoy Nut Farm in Captain Cook, Hawaii has approximately 10 acres of certified organic macadamia nut trees at an elevation of 900 feet. Our nuts are “truly raw” since they are still in their shell. Other nuts being sold as “raw” have been shelled and then dehydrated and will not sprout since they have been cooked.
Enjoy the fantastic flavor and freshness of macadamias right out of their shell!
